Franklin County’s St. George Island keeps on racking up the awards with newspapers, magazines and travel sites! (Of course, we’re not the least bit surprised.) Most recently, our local paradise earned top spots on ranking lists by Coastal Living and Northwest Florida Daily News. Keep reading to learn what all the buzz is about.
SGI Lands a Top Spot on Ranking of Best Florida Beaches
Northwest Florida Daily News ranked St. George Island as number 7 in their Top 10 Best Beaches in Florida list. To create the list, The Daily News looked at the favorite beaches of five different travel entities: The Travel Channel, Conde Nast Travel, Coastal Living, Planetware and Trips to Discover. They then assigned a point value to the ratings, ultimately arriving at an “informal list of the Sunshine State’s best locations where the sand meets the water,” according to the article. The Daily News adds, “Of course, we think our Northwest Florida beaches are the best in the world!” We’d have to agree!
Of our beloved local island, The Daily News wrote, “St. George Island State Park is up in our neck of the woods, off the coast of Apalachicola. It’s a barrier island and offers camping, hiking and picnicking as its primary recreational activities.”
SGI’s Rock by the Sea Hits the Right Note
Coastal Living recently included St. George Island’s Rock by the Sea in its list of The Best Music Festivals on the Beach in Florida. Coastal Living reporter Kara Franker writes, “In an area known as Florida’s Forgotten Coast (because of its unspoiled beaches), St. George Island is a hidden gem tucked inside the Apalachicola Bay. It’s the perfect place to listen to live music by the beach. Every spring, the island hosts a multi-day Rock by The Sea music festival featuring dozens of up-and-coming songwriters, as well as more well-known headliners like former American Idol winners. Ticket sales benefit the University of Florida’s cancer program as well as other local charities.”
This year’s Rock by the Sea will be held Wednesday May 8 through Sunday, May 12. The festival officially kicks off with a pre-party on Wednesday at 6:30 pm and features music every day through Sunday Brunch.
